The designer rule for sizing wall art
Art should span 57–75% of the wall width behind it. Too narrow — say, a small frame on a wide wall — and the piece looks lost. Too wide and it overwhelms the space. The 57–75% range gives the art visual presence without dominating the room.
Above a sofa: The art width should be roughly 2/3 of the sofa's length. For a standard 84-inch sofa, aim for a piece 56–63 inches wide.
Above a fireplace: Match the art width to the mantel width — or go slightly narrower (about 80% of mantel width) so the mantel is still visible.
Hanging height: The universal rule is to hang art so its centre is at 57–60 inches from the floor — the same standard museums and galleries use worldwide. This puts the focal point at average eye level.
Gallery walls: A curated arrangement of multiple pieces can span wider — up to 85% of wall width — because the negative space between frames creates visual breathing room.
