How to choose the right rug size

The most common decorating mistake is a rug that's too small. A rug that barely peeks out from under the sofa makes the whole room feel disconnected and smaller than it is. The fix is simple: go bigger.

Living rooms: For the most polished look, all legs of the main sofa and chairs should sit on the rug. If the room is small, at least the front two legs of each sofa should be on it. Leave 18 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the wall.

Bedrooms: The rug should extend 18–24 inches beyond each side of the bed. For a queen bed, an 8×10 usually works well. For a king, go for a 9×12.

Dining rooms: The rug needs to be large enough that chairs stay on it when pulled out — typically 24 inches beyond the table on all sides. A 9×12 works for most dining tables.
